The challenge is that the most dangerous events are uncommon and short-lived. The ocean is excellent at hiding its worst behaviour until the camera is pointed somewhere else.
Rogue waves are not legends. They are physics with terrible timing. The sea can organize ordinary wave energy into extraordinary hazards, producing sudden walls of water that make old sailor stories sound less like exaggeration and more like peer review with worse lighting.
