On 21 August 1986, Lake Nyos in Cameroon did something a lake should not be able to do: it released a deadly cloud of carbon dioxide. The gas poured out, flowed through nearby valleys, and suffocated people and animals by displacing oxygen.1 It was not lava, not poison in the cinematic green-glow sense, and not a curse. It was a lake doing gas physics with catastrophic timing.

The Lake Was a Pressurised Trap

Lake Nyos sits in a volcanic region. Carbon dioxide from below can dissolve into deep lake water, especially when the lake is stratified and the bottom water does not mix freely with the surface.13 Over time, the lower water becomes loaded with dissolved gas. That is the same basic principle as a fizzy drink, except the bottle is a crater lake and nobody invited it to the picnic.

If the deep water is disturbed or starts rising, pressure drops, gas comes out of solution, and the rising bubbles can drag more gas-rich water upward. That feedback can turn into a limnic eruption: the lake suddenly exhales.

CO2 is colourless and odourless, and it is denser than air. In the Lake Nyos disaster, the cloud moved low along the ground, collecting in valleys where people and animals breathed an atmosphere suddenly short on oxygen.1 This is the kind of fact that makes you glare at perfectly ordinary-looking lakes like they know something.

After the disaster, scientists and engineers worked on degassing systems: pipes that bring deep, gas-rich water upward so CO2 can escape gradually instead of catastrophically.23 Once started, the rising gas helps lift more water through the pipe, creating a controlled fountain of relieved lake burps.

The aim is not to make the lake harmless in a fairy-tale sense. It is to lower stored CO2 enough that the system cannot build toward another sudden release.

Lake Nyos is one of the clearest reminders that Earth hazards do not need to look dramatic to be dramatic. A calm surface can hide a chemically loaded system. Sometimes the planet does not roar, erupt, or split open. Sometimes it silently exhales and ruins everyone's afternoon forever.
