Lightning already had enough drama: blinding light, thunder, trees exploding, everyone pretending they remember whether rubber tyres help. Then scientists found that lightning can also trigger nuclear reactions in the atmosphere, producing positrons, the antimatter partners of electrons.1 That is not weather. From Thunderstorm to Gamma-Ray Factory
Strong electric fields in thunderstorms can accelerate electrons to high energies.
